A. When opening your documents in whatever program you are using, more than likely there is a "files of type" setting that ONLY shows certain file types. For example, in Microsoft Word when you click to open a file it defaults the "files of type" to DOC files since that's the common file type that Word creates. This means you ONLY see the DOC files listed in the My Documents folder in that particular program. To access other file types in Word, for example, just change the "files of type" to whatever file type you created your document as (for example, NOTEPAD usually creates TXT files so you'd change "files of type" in WORD to TXT and voila! Your document should show up (but the DOC files will be gone). Another way to open the program you… [cont.]

Is a file header the same as a file signature?
Q. I am explaining about data compression in an assignment. I have read that the highest level of compression is a JPEG file for example and that the actual content of the file is compressed but the file header isn't. When i load a JPEG file into a hex viewer you can see the file signature JFIF or whatever (or the first 20 bytes). Is this the same thing as a file header? many thanks.
Asked by Ben W - Sat Apr 11 09:24:19 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The file signiture is contained within the header, it will be the first few bytes. The file header contains more information though. If its a photo, it will contain the date it was taken, the model/name of the camera, etc. Open up a jpeg photo in notepad, you'll see a big section at the top (the header) then a gap, then the actual photo data.

A. it depends on what email program you use. Also, keep in mind that a lot of people on the other end of your email might have image files disabled and won't see it. Btw, that's the first time I've heard of anyone use a gif in about 10 years. I thought it was all jpg these days.

What is a virus signature? How is it used to scan files for a virus so quickly?
Q. I'm looking for a somewhat technical explanation, or a website that explains these details. I realize there are other scanning techniques (e.g. heuristic, etc.), but I am only interested in the virus signature approach right now. I've always thought that a virus signature was essentially "the virus" encoded so that the AV software would know what string of bytes it was searching for in the files it scanned. If an AV software was capable of detecting 100,000 viruses, I thought (in general) it would have 100,000 virus signatures in it's database. Last night I scanned my PC -- it plowed through 500,000 files in less than 80 minutes! If you have 100,000 virus signatures, how do you search each one against each file that quickly? I… [cont.]

A. A single signature may be the same through a large number of viruses so being able to detect 50 viruses could only require 1 signature to compare to every file. So in theory if 1 in 50 viruses carry the same signature 100,000 viruses could be detected based on 2000 signatures. This is just a theory because I have no idea how it works, I'd like to see what others post.

A. You can sign the contract digitally in Reader only if the creator of the file made a digital signature field. If they did, you'll see a form field indicating it as such. Simply click in the field and follow the instructions. If there is not field you won't be able to sign it digitally.

Does the April 15th (17th) deadline apply to filing of taxes AND mailing of a 8453 signature form?
Q. More specifically, if you e-file, and you are unable to sign your return electronically, does the 8453 signature form need to be filed by April 17th or does the April 17th deadline only apply to filing?

A. it only applies to filing. You can send any signature forms later. It specifically says when you e-file that the forms can be sent later, if you don't send the forms later they will send you a letter asking for them.
